Alabama Legislature Gavels to a Close

The state legisalture gaveled to a close on Tuesday, June 6. Gov. Kay Ivey signed budget bills on June 1. She has 10 days from the last day of session to sign or pocket veto any remaining legislation. One bill Governor Ivey has already signed into law is SB 261, sponsored by Sen. Dan Roberts of Birmingham. The measure prohibits Alabama companies from engaging in economic boycotts or other actions that further social, political, or ideological interests. The legislatio also prohibits governmental entities from entering into public contracts with businesses that engage in economic boycotts. The governor also signed HB 421 by Rep. Reed Ingram of Montgomery. That legislation designates the Yellowhammer Cookie as the official state cookie. The action came after 4th graders at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery learned that Alabama didn’t have an official cookie. Students held a cookie contest, and were studying Alabama history, they learned Alabama did not have an official cookie. The students held a cookie contest and Mary Claire Cook’s cookie with pecans, peanuts and oats was named the best cookie.
