LB 57 would jeopardize local job creators and their employees

Nebraska Small Businesses Urge Opposition to Burdensome Paid Leave Mandate

LINCOLN (Jan. 30, 2023) – Local job creators are urging lawmakers to oppose LB 57, which fails to take into consideration the realities of owning and operating a small business by mandating paid family and medical leave. With small businesses making up 99 percent of employers in Nebraska, many of whom make accommodations and arrangements to meet their employees’ needs, this cookie-cutter approach would escalate the cost of doing business and put Nebraskans’ jobs at risk. Ahead of his testimony before the Business and Labor Committee, NFIB State Director Bob Hallstrom issued the following statement:
“Local job creators go out of their way to recruit and retain talented staff – who often become like members of the family.  They do all they can to provide generous benefits and accommodate their employees’ needs for extended leave. Employers need greater flexibility to continue making these types of arrangements. This mandate would put many of our small businesses in jeopardy. We’re asking the legislature to understand the reality these small businesses are operating in and to oppose this bill.”
