Issues

  • Fighting for greater competition among healthcare providers in Oregon

We will continue its fight for more competition among healthcare providers. And it will battle against legislative attempts to add more healthcare mandates on to basic policies, which only make insurance unaffordable for small business. We succeeded in killing numerous mandated health insurance bills in the last two sessions of the Oregon Legislature that would have crippled small business with new payroll taxes. We are also fighting against new tax proposals that would require businesses to pay for the health insurance of the uninsured.

  • Opposing unemployment insurance exemption changes in Oregon

The Legislature explored the idea of changing the exemption of LLCs and employees who are managers to require them to contribute to unemployment insurance. This is something that we lead the fight against and succeeded in fending off legislation that would require this change. We will continue to fight any legislation that does this in the future.

  • Continuing to fight increased corporate minimum taxes and increased personal income taxes in Oregon

We will continue its opposition for an increase in the corporate minimum tax and increase in the personal income tax. An increase in the corporate minimum tax and personal income tax were passed in the 2009 session and we're working aggressively to oppose these two new taxes as it is referred to the ballot for voters to decide. We opposed these two taxes during the legislative session and is urging voters to reject these increased taxes on small businesses.

  • Lobbying against any legislative attempt to create paid family leave in Oregon

Legislation that would have created a state-paid family leave program was narrowly defeated in the last session of the Legislature, thanks in part to our work. The issue is expected to surface again in the future. Neighboring states have recently passed similar legislation, so lawmakers here are ready to jump on the bandwagon. Small business owners want the freedom to grant these leaves on their own and not have government holding a gun to their head. We will be leading the fight against any such bill.

  • Fighting against new regulations and taxes on greenhouse gas emissions

The governor’s Global Warming Commission and the Western Climate Initiative have proposed dramatic new regulations and taxes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  These actions could be devastating to Oregon’s small businesses. We will fight to protect small business as these policies are developed.
