Healthcare Costs Took Centerstage at Massachusetts Small Business Day
The program began with a legislative update highlighting some of the bills and policies maneuvering through Beacon Hill. This included a report on the unemployment insurance trust fund, issues impacting the restaurant industry, the Governor’s $700 million tax cut plan, and two court cases modifying state employment law.
The healthcare portion of the agenda began with a presentation on health equity from Sandra Wolitzky, Deputy Chief of the Attorney General’s Health Care Division. Undersecretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, Lauren Peters then presented on Governor Baker’s new healthcare bill, highlighting provisions that make changes necessary to Massachusetts’ unique merged market. The keynote speaker was Senator Cindy Friedman, Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing. Senator Friendman offered some brief remarks before asking to hear directly from small business owners. Several callers voiced their concerns with rising health expenses, high deductible plans, and the desire for small businesses to gain the ability to band together and have similar buying power to large corporations, government, and unions.
