SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 18, 2025—A poll of small business owners released today by NFIB California, the state’s largest small business association, showed Main Street entrepreneurs in no mood for any further state intervention into anything.

“None of the questions we asked were good ideas in the best of times,” said John Kabateck, state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). “Now that we’re re-building the fire-ravaged parts of our state and finally – finally! – showing signs of putting the pandemic-decimated parts of our economy behind us, they make even less sense.”

Every year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) polls its membership, made up entirely of small business owners, on state and federal issues vital to their survival. Results center NFIB’s lobbying positions in Sacramento and in Washington, D.C.  The typical NFIB member employs between one and nine people and reports gross sales of about $500,000 a year.

The 2025 NFIB California-member ballot asked four questions.

Should California pass legislation giving employees the right to ignore employer communications during nonworking hours?

Yes 12%
No 79%
Und. 9%

Should California enshrine the right to unionize in the state constitution?

Yes 7%
No 84%
Und. 9%

Should the California state government continue to impose new regulations and mandates on private business to control gasoline prices?

Yes 5%
No 92%
Und. 3%

Should small business websites be regulated to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act?

Yes 4%
No 91%
Und. 5%
