NFIB Encourages Connecticut Residents to Shop Small During Tax-Free Week

August 13, 2025

Sales tax holiday to take place Sunday, August 17th through Saturday, August 23rd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HARTFORD, CT (August 13, 2025)  Ahead of the Sales Tax Holiday, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, is encouraging consumers to shop small. The sales tax holiday, which begins this Sunday, August 17th and runs through Saturday, August 23rd, is a great opportunity to support local businesses. NFIB State Director Andy Markowski is urging Connecticut residents to take advantage of the state’s annual sales tax holiday by shopping at locally-owned small businesses.

“When you shop locally, more of your hard-earned dollars stay within the community,” Markowski said. “On average, 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community. What’s more, another 50 cents is generated through things like employee wages and local supply purchases. That kind of ripple effect keeps our towns strong and keeps people working.”

“Main Street businesses are the backbone of our economy,” continued Markowski. “They create jobs, support local schools, and give back through donations and sponsorships. This coming week is a great chance for families to stretch their dollars and support the small businesses that keep our communities going.”

During the week, the usual 6.35% state sales tax will not be charged on sales or purchases of most items of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 per item, and the exemption applies to each regardless of how many of those items are sold to a customer on the same invoice.

According to the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, the 2025 Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 AM ET on Sunday, August 17th, and concludes Saturday, August 23rd at midnight.
