Key House Committees Advance Critical Legislation to Improve Small Business Healthcare Affordability

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 8, 2023) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, sent letters of support to the House Committee on Education and Workforce and the House Committee on Ways and Means regarding legislation that aims to enhance the flexibility and affordability of healthcare options for small businesses. “For nearly 40 years, small business owners have cited the rising cost of health insurance as their top business concern,” said Josselin Castillo, NFIB Manager of Federal Government Relations. “Small business owners often struggle to manage the cost of offering employer-sponsored health insurance, which threatens their ability to offer competitive benefits packages to attract and retain a talented workforce, especially with a tight labor market. NFIB welcomes the advancement of this important legislation and urges a floor vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.” Key legislation such as the Health Association Plans Act and the CHOICE Arrangement Act holds the potential to enhance access to affordable and flexible healthcare, reduce administrative burdens, and empower small employers. NFIB released a survey on the challenges small businesses face with health insurance costs. Rapidly increasing health costs have become unsustainable and 98% of small employers are concerned that their ability to provide health insurance will become unsustainable in the next 5-10 years. The Hill recently published an op-ed from NFIB’s Josselin Castillo on the importance of Congress acting on health insurance options. NFIB also joined a coalition letter with other associations asking Congress to improve healthcare options and affordability for Main Street.
