Why A Patchwork of Regulations Undermines Small Business Owners

In recent years, large and mid-sized cities have stepped out of their lane and attempted to regulate the private employment practices of small business owners. But recently, cities have taken it one step further, attempting to regulate products, suggesting they’ll ban the use of fossil fuels or gas-powered motors. This patchwork of regulations – where ordinances differ from city to city – makes it harder to do business across the Lone Star State. It’s bad for employers, their employees, and their customers. That’s why the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act is so crucial in this legislative session. With a recession on the horizon and inflation continuing to put pressure on prices, time is of the essence. In a recent letter to the editor of the Dallas Morning News, NFIB Member and small business owner Andy Ellard dispelled some of the myths surrounding the bill, writing: “Local control has lost all meaning — and has instead become a Trojan horse for costly and burdensome regulations that would shutter small businesses like mine. The Texas Legislature has an obligation to protect our state’s economy. I hope they send HB 2127 to the governor’s desk as quickly as possible.” We need you to make your voice heard.
