AUSTIN (Aug. 1, 2023) – “It’s next to impossible for a small business owner who wears multiple hats throughout the day to have to keep track of the various cities that they have to comply with,” said NFIB Member Small Business Owner Eduardo Contreras in an interview with Spectrum News’ reporter Charlotte Scott on why the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act is supported by local job creators. Varying regulations from city to city are difficult to navigate and often include steep penalties for alleged violations. “If we do this in the City of Dallas, or the City of San Antonio, we’re going to have to try to understand how to comply with their regulations before even going out there to do the work. And of course, what happens if we don’t comply? Then we have those penalties.” The Texas Regulatory Consistency Act enforces the State Constitution and provides greater certainty in the regulatory landscape. “We all want to be in compliance,” Contreras said. “It just doesn’t need to be a tangled web between all these separate cities, which have no consistency or streamline to those regulations.” CLICK HERE to watch the full conversation. Background: The Texas Regulatory Consistency Act was signed into law by Governor Abbott in June. The House approved the bill on a bipartisan basis in April, before the bill advanced out of the Senate in May. Despite the misleading claims from some local officials, cities and counties retain their authority to address local concerns.
