Tennessee Shares New Guide for Upcoming Consumer Privacy Law

May 5, 2025

The law gives people more control over how businesses collect, use, and store their personal information

The state attorney general’s office has released a new guide to help consumers and businesses understand a new state law that protects personal data. The Tennessee Information Protection Act will take effect on July 1.

NFIB worked with interested parties on aspects of the legislation, which passed the General Assembly and was signed by Gov. Bill Lee in 2023. It gives people more control over how businesses collect, use, and store their personal information. It also requires certain businesses to follow rules that protect customer data.

“Small business owners value the trust of their customers and understand the importance of protecting personal information,” NFIB State Director Jim Brown said. “The Tennessee Information Protection Act gives consumers more transparency while giving businesses, especially small ones, clear steps to follow.”

The new guide is now available on the attorney general’s website. It explains what businesses need to do to follow the law and how consumers can protect their data. Click here to learn more.
