NFIB retail members urged to participate in vendors' compensation study

State Surveying TN Retailers on Sales Tax Collections

NFIB members in the retail industry have an excellent opportunity to help shape public policy that directly impacts their operations. The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) is conducting a study of our state sales tax, including the cost to businesses of collecting it. Restoration of vendors’ compensation is possible, but members must speak up now. NFIB has been urging lawmakers to reinstate modest vendors’ compensation, which began in 1947 but was removed in 2000 during a budget shortfall. In 2022, it was reinstated but only for one year. According to a recent Member Ballot, 72% of NFIB members said Tennessee should compensate retailers permanently to help defray costs associated with collecting and remitting the sales tax to the state. Tennessee should acknowledge that retailers are unpaid sales tax collectors. You can complete the confidential TACIR study HERE.
