Small business owners met with Sen. Huizenga to discuss current legislation
Last month, NFIB hosted a small business roundtable in Grand Rapids at NFIB member business Firehouse Guitars. State Senator Mark Huizenga joined to discuss the latest legislative issues and what small businesses can expect.
One issue NFIB is focused on is stopping lawsuit abuse in the state. We’re currently tracking two bills that would help curb lawsuit abuse and stem liability insurance increases in Michigan:
- Premises Liability Reform: Following a clear case of judicial activism, the 2023 Michigan Supreme Court eliminated the “open and obvious” doctrine as a threshold issue in premises liability cases. Tell your state Senator to pass House Bill 4582, which reinstates the “open and obvious” doctrine standard for premises liability here.
- Third Party Litigation Funding: Lawsuit lending allows outside investors to profit from lawsuits with little transparency or oversight. Click here to tell your senators to support House Bill 5281 and protect Michigan small businesses.
