NFIB’s Amanda Fisher and Small Business Owner Ann Chaffee Testified in Michigan House Committee

NFIB Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher and NFIB member Ann Chaffee, third-generation owner of Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners in Lansing, testified today before the House Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employers and Small Businesses.

Fisher and Chaffee testified to the changes needed to the Earned Sick Time Act before the law goes into effect on Feb. 21, 2025. NFIB supports legislation that makes changes to the earned sick time laws.

“Time is ticking for the Michigan Legislature to act and pass HB 4002 before small businesses are left with a costly mandate they simply cannot afford,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director. “We are grateful that Speaker Hall and Chairman Schuette have made this a priority and are taking swift action to make these common sense but crucial changes to the Earned Sick Time Act. We are hopeful that the Senate will quickly follow suit and small business owners have answers sooner than later.”

Ann Chaffee shared her concerns about the direct cost her business and her employees, “As a small business I cannot handle this extra financial and administrative burden to my business, but even more importantly, I’m concerned about the negative effect on our employees. Small businesses like mine operate with a family-oriented atmosphere, but without the important changes in House Bill 4002, the earned sick time act will force me to change how time off is handled and prevent the flexibility that my employees currently enjoy.”
