NFIB highlights top legislative priorities for small businesses
LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 29, 2026) – Michigan’s leading advocate for small business, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), today released its “2026 Main Street Agenda” that lists the group’s top priorities for the 2026 legislative session.
“NFIB’s focus will be to work with legislators to move policies that provide small businesses
a fair and stable environment that encourages job creation and growth. This includes halting any legislation that is detrimental to a small business’ ability to thrive as well as working on reversing damaging policies put in place by the previous legislature,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director.
NFIB’s Main Street Agenda includes addressing legal reform including reinstatement of the “open and obvious doctrine” for premises liability, full elimination of the personal property tax, cutting government spending, and instituting a full exemption from the Earned Sick Time Act for Michigan’s smallest businesses.
“NFIB will also remain vigilant against anti-small business legislation being pushed by labor and progressive groups including workers compensation changes that will significantly increase costs, labor mandates, 1099/independent contractors, and a bevy of tax increases,” continued Fisher.
NFIB will continue to work with policymakers to understand the unique challenges facing small business owners in Michigan. “Small businesses make up half of our state’s employers and are crucial to Michigan communities. Small businesses have smaller margins and less ability to absorb even seemingly small regulations and mandates compared to larger businesses. It is important that policymakers recognize the direct and indirect impact of their decisions on Main Street businesses,” said Fisher.
