S.2272 Would Cut Costs for MS Farm and Forestry Small Businesses

January 28, 2026

The measure would ease the financial burden on Mississippi's agricultural industry

NFIB State Director Leah Long says small business owners are urging the state Senate to pass S.2272, legislation that would exempt certain agricultural and logging supplies from Mississippi’s sales tax.

“Small business owners who work in agriculture and forestry are dealing with higher costs for fuel, equipment and supplies,” Long said. “Senate Bill 2272 would help relieve the financial pressure on these businesses by removing sales taxes on the tools and materials they need to operate.”

The measure would eliminate the state sales tax on several items used by commercial farmers and professional loggers. It would end taxes on agricultural and logging equipment that was previously taxed at a reduced rate and fully exempt livestock fencing materials and agricultural lime when purchased for agricultural purposes. The legislation also directs the Department of Revenue to create a permit system so eligible farmers can receive the exemption at the time of purchase.

The bill would provide meaningful relief for small businesses in rural areas, where farming and logging are often the backbone of local economies, Long said.

“These businesses aren’t asking for special treatment,” she said. “They’re asking for common-sense tax relief on essential supplies so they can stay competitive, protect jobs and support Mississippi’s economy.”
