NFIB Urges Senate to Pass Critical Tort Reform Bill

The measure passed out of committee on Tuesday, could come up for a vote in the full Senate on Wednesday

NFIB State Director Ben Homeyer applauded the Senate Judiciary Committee for passing Senate Bill 244, which would help reduce lawsuit abuse in the state. The measure could come up for a vote by the full Senate as early as Wednesday.

“S.244 is one of NFIB’s top priorities this session,” Homeyer said. “This commonsense legislation ensures that small business owners and other defendants are held responsible only for their fair share of damages, preventing frivolous and excessive claims.”

“People have the right to seek compensation if they’ve been wronged or injured, but too often, lawsuits are filed just to exploit the system,” Homeyer said. “No one should have to pay for someone else’s mistake just because their lawyer thinks they have deeper pockets.”

“Lawsuit abuse is driving up insurance costs and forcing business owners to spend money on legal fees instead of growing their businesses, creating jobs, and supporting their communities,” he said. “That’s why we need the full Senate to act quickly and pass this important bill.”

Homeyer also thanked Sen. Shane Massey and the Senate Judiciary Committee for their efforts in shepherding this long-needed legislation to the Senate floor.
