Small businesses disappointed with lack of relief; lawmakers add to affordability crisis.

NFIB Reaction to the Conclusion of the 2023 Legislative Session

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ALBANY, NY (June 10, 2023) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), New York and the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, released the following statement by NFIB State Director Ashley Ranslow in reaction to the end of the legislative session today: “The end of the 2023 legislative session was a missed opportunity to address the most pressing challenges facing small businesses across the state, but even worse, lawmakers passed a slew of bills that will worsen New York’s reputation as a hostile place to do business. Main Street has been pleading with Albany to tackle New York’s $8 billion Unemployment Insurance debt that has led to outrageous taxes and fees and has urged lawmakers to phase out the outdated and unnecessary Covid sick leave law. Those pleas continue to go completely ignored. Small businesses will not see any sort of relief and instead are being saddled with new mandates and regulations, an increase in workers’ compensation costs, and a growing array of devastating lawsuits that will send insurance premiums through the roof. It’s obvious that Main Street is an afterthought in Albany. Lawmakers have demonstrated no desire to help the small businesses that they seem to conveniently remember and flaunt during campaign season.”
