Lawmakers brief West Tennessee small business owners on 2023 session
NFIB Members from Memphis Engage Panel of Legislators
Last week, four state legislators from West Tennessee recapped the 2023 session with more than 20 NFIB members and guests from the Memphis area in attendance. Representatives from the offices of Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty joined the group.
Sen. Paul Rose and Reps. Karen Camper, Chris Todd and Kevin Vaughan highlighted the significant wins for small business earlier this year. Rose, Todd and Vaughan are NFIB members. The panel touted the Tennessee Works Tax Act ($400 million tax relief package) and the $3 billion Transportation Modernization Act.
The group agreed the state needs to review laws on the books and consider new proposals that could help address mass shootings like at the Covenant School in Nashville. Camper argued for convening a special session, which Governor Bill Lee is proposing in late August, while the other lawmakers said these issues should be addressed thoroughly and openly during regular session.
NFIB does not have a position on these issues but will monitor the debates, as always, to assess if there could be any impact on the business community.
