SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 13, 2021—NFIB California is one of 186 business associations that today submitted a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Legislature not only for asking for regulatory relief but also providing active steps California’s elected leaders can take toward improving the state’s dismal economy.

“Our letter is more than a list of grievances,” said John Kabateck, California state director for NFIB. “I like to think of it as a road map to recovery, and I’m hoping the impressive list of co-signers will command the attention of state leaders in a more concentrated way than would have been possible had any one of us tried to go it alone. I also believe that yesterday’s 24-point drop in the percentage of small-business owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months is an added incentive to pay attention.” Click here to see NFIB’s monthly Small Business Economic Trends report (aka the Optimism Index).

“The shut downs have already devastated many small and large employers, and brought misery to millions of workers,” stated the letter. “As the shut down continues indefinitely, many more of these businesses will close permanently, unable to withstand the financial losses they are suffering. … The financial grant programs, loans, and tax relief will certainly help. However, not all employers who need assistance will be eligible and even for those who do, will not receive enough money to fully offset the costs they are facing as a result of the pandemic.

“… These closures take with them jobs, local tax revenues, and social glue from both local communities and the State. At the same time, California continues to suffer a significant exodus of employers to other states, who are seeking lower taxes, fewer regulatory burdens, more affordable housing for employees, and reduced employment litigation.”
