NFIB Closely Monitoring Bill Changing How Local Business Taxes Are Paid

HB253 would create a single website where owners could pay taxes for multiple cities and counties

NFIB State Director Tom Underwood says small business owners are watching legislation that could change how they pay local taxes. The measure, introduced by Rep. Jared Bauman (28th District) and Rep. Rachel Roarx (38th District), would create a single website where owners could pay taxes for multiple cities and counties.

“Right now, if you’re a small business owner with operations in two towns in neighboring counties, you or your accountant must file separate tax returns in each municipality and county. Some businesses are filing dozens of these forms. House Bill 253 would change that by creating one website covering all local jurisdictions.

“Of course, the devil’s in the details, and our small business members want to make sure this wouldn’t lead to higher tax rates to cover the cost of the program or create a new state bureaucracy that controls the local funds.

“NFIB will follow this legislation closely and continue to advocate for lowering and simplifying the tax burden on Kentucky’s job creators so they can keep more of their hard-earned money to reinvest back into their small businesses.”
