NFIB California Main Street Minute, September 25-29

Welcome to the September 25-29 edition of the Main Street Minute from your small-business-advocacy team in Sacramento.
The Suspense Continues
  • It’s now been 11 days since the Legislature adjourned and two-and-a-half weeks to go before the deadline Gov. Gavin Newsom has to sign or veto bills.
  • The governor has been busy signing or vetoing measures, but last week acted on none of the 17 bills of most concern to NFIB, making the next two weeks nail-biting time. NFIB’s latest bill list includes links to the veto-request letters we have sent to him.
  • Stay tuned.
Mark the Date
  • Retail theft and its commensurate workplace violence are more pronounced in California than in other states. On October 4, NFIB is producing a webinar titled Workplace Safety in a Violent World that will offer information on:

Types of workplace violence Warning signs/pre-incident indicators What and when to report Counseling and defusing Handling disciplinary actions including terminations Trigger events Critical policies and procedures.

  • NFIB’s special guest for this webinar is Carol Dodgen, owner of Dodgen Security Consulting, LLC. She is a nationally recognized security expert who has provided training for more than 150,000 corporate, manufacturing, utility, law enforcement and security personnel for the past 26 years.
  • NFIB’s webinars are free and available to all, but registration is required. Next week’s Main Street Minute will provide a link to the October 4 one.
National Highlights from NFIB Legislative Program Manager Caitlin Lanzara’s weekly report
  • On September 18, NFIB sent a letter to the House Financial Services Committee expressing disappointment that the committee did not consider stronger legislation to delay or repeal the beneficial ownership information regulation.

NFIB Vice President Kevin Kuhlman was quoted in a Thomson Reuters article reacting to the release of the FinCEN Small Entity Compliance Guide for the beneficial ownership information regulation, saying, “What I think the compliance guide demonstrates is what began as a simple and basic request for four pieces of information has turned into a very complicated 56-page compliance guide … that will overwhelm small businesses.”

  • Also on September 18, NFIB released a statement in response to the IRS delay of existing Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) applications & suspending new claims until 2024.
  • On September 22, NFIB released Episode 18 of the “Small Business Rundown” podcast, featuring Executive Director of the NFIB Small Business Legal Center Elizabeth Milito discussing recent U.S. Supreme Court cases that affected small business and looking ahead to the new term.
