NFIB Asks Committee to Prevent Local Governments from Being Able to Enact Their Own Minimum Wage

NFIB submitted testimony in opposition this week against House Bill 4237, which would repeal the Local Government Labor Regulatory Limitation Act. In 2015, NFIB worked to pass this legislation that prevented local governments from establishing a higher minimum wage, require certain leave policies and other employer benefits that are not required by state or federal law. House Bill 4237, currently in the House Labor Committee, would repeal that exemption, allowing cities, counties, and townships to pass their own labor laws governing the employer/employee relationship. By repealing this Act, Michigan could become a patchwork of different wage and benefit regulations across the state. This could end up being a regulatory nightmare for those small businesses who have workers in multiple locations, including remote workers. NFIB believes that local governments have enough challenges providing the basic services that their citizens want and deserve. It is unnecessary for them to expand into policy areas that are more efficiently and appropriately the jurisdiction of the state and/or federal government.
