New laws mean bigger minimum wage increases starting next year

Minnesota Releases New Minimum Wage Rates for 2025

In August, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry announced the statewide minimum wage will increase to $11.13 per hour on January 1, 2025. Earlier this year, Gov. Walz signed a law eliminating lower minimum wage rates for younger workers, J-1 visa holders, and small businesses (which was $8.85/hour in 2024). Those wage rates will no longer be available after December 31, 2024. Please be aware that the new minimum wage rate impacts a required workplace poster that must be displayed in the workplace and a required notice that must be provided to all employees. MN DLI will update the posters, which can be found here, later in 2024. NFIB members can still get a free federal workplace poster here: Free Federal Workplace Poster – NFIB. Local Minimum Wage Rates: In Minneapolis, the minimum wage will rise to $15.97 per hour. St. Paul’s minimum wage remains tiered by employee count: 1-5 employees: $12.25/hour (effective 7/1/2024) 6-100 employees: $14/hour (effective 7/1/2024) The statewide training wage, which is available during the first 90 days of employment for workers under the age of 20 years, will rise to $9.08. You can learn more about the statewide minimum wage here. Find information on the Minneapolis minimum wage here and St. Paul minimum wage here.
