Maryland: A New Administration and New General Assembly

Democrat Wes Moore will be sworn in as Maryland’s 63rd governor on Wednesday, January 18th. Moore takes over from Republican Larry Hogan, who was term-limited and lead the state for the last eight years. This will be the governor-elect’s first time in elected office. A handful of state agency heads and other key posts have been announced with several more expected soon, including the Departments of Labor and Commerce. There is also a new Comptroller and Attorney General. Brooke Lierman and Anthony Brown will take over the respective positions after decisive victories in November. Lierman is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, and Anthony Brown represented Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties in the U.S. House of Representatives. Both are Democrats. Democrats come back to Annapolis for the 445th regular session of the General Assembly with increased supermajorities in both chambers. Democrats will hold 34 of 47 seats in the state Senate and 102 of 141 seats in the House of Delegates. Bill Ferguson (D – Baltimore City) is expected to preside over the Senate and Adrienne Jones (D – Baltimore County) as Speaker in the House. Steve Hershey (R – Upper Eastern Shore) will lead Republicans in the Senate and Jason Buckel (R – Allegany County) will be Minority Leader in the House. NFIB will continue its strong presence among policy makers and engage in issues on behalf of Maryland small businesses. Be sure to read your member’s newsletter for policy updates as they arise. State Director Mike O’Halloran can be reached at MikeA.OHalloran@nfib.org.
