Local Job Creators Ask State Legislature to Override Governor Kelly’s Veto of Needed Tax Relief

TOPEKA (April 24, 2023) – Following Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of bipartisan tax reform, small business owners are urging the Kansas Legislature to override the Governor’s decision and provide meaningful tax relief for Main Street businesses. The bipartisan tax reform passed out of the Legislature last month would eliminate the three-tiered income tax structure and replace it with a single, flat tax rate.

Noting that small business owners continue to struggle in this economic environment, NFIB State Director Dan Murray said:

“Last month, on a bipartisan basis, the Legislature overhauled our broken tax system with a single, flat tax. This tax reform not only makes it easier for small business owners to invest in their employees and expand their operations but strengthens Kansas’s economic footing. It’s disappointing that Governor Kelly vetoed that reform, especially as small businesses continue to battle numerous economic headwinds. Our local job creators are asking the Legislature to override that veto and make tax relief a reality this legislative session.”
