NFIB is tracking several bills that would affect Main Street businesses
NFIB State Director Rosemary Elebash says several bills important to small businesses are working their way through the Alabama Legislature. They include:
- SB 71, a measure that would prevent state agencies from adopting environmental rules that are stricter than federal law. It would also provide regulatory certainty by aligning state rules with federal standards. NFIB supports SB 71.
- SB 167, a bill that would let Alabama courts decide cases based on the facts and merits, rather than automatically deferring to state agency regulations. This legislation reflects the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Chevron case. SB 167 has cleared the House Judiciary Committee and is ready for final passage. NFIB members supported this measure by 80% on the 2026 state ballot.
- SB 221, legislation that would exclude credit card processing fees from sales and use tax calculations. These fees help businesses cover the cost of card transactions. It has passed the Senate Finance and Taxation Education Committee. NFIB supports the bill.
We will continue to keep you informed about these and other bills that affect your right to own, operate, and grow your business.
