The DATCP issued guidance for Wisconsin small businesses on "rounding" cash transactions

NFIB Wisconsin received this update today from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) regarding cash transaction rounding practices. This is provided as an informational alert only.

In response to ongoing coin shortages, DATCP has released new guidance allowing businesses to round cash transaction totals under specific circumstances. Here’s a quick overview:

–  Applies only to cash payments when exact change isn’t available after calculating total (price + tax).

–  Businesses can choose rounding method; DATCP suggests rounding down for fairness, e.g.:

–  $0.01–$0.04 rounds down to $0.00.

–  $0.06–$0.09 rounds down to $0.05.

–  Enforcement is case-by-case based on complaints or inspections.

–  Post clear signage at entrances and points of sale for transparency.

Full details may be found here.
