Illinois General Assembly Convenes, Then Cancels Session

The Illinois General Assembly met on January 5 to begin the Spring Legislative Session. Legislators spent one day in Springfield to adopt rules that enable remote, electronic voting. The House and Senate have both since canceled Session for the rest of January. COVID transmissions and hospitalizations have been rising the past few weeks in Illinois. In addition, legislators are desperately scurrying to obtain the requisite signatures necessary to file to run for reelection in newly drawn legislative districts. Therefore, legislative leaders believe it would be best to keep everyone home, rather than in Springfield. Both chambers have since announced they will cancel session in Springfield until February.

In the meantime, some committee hearings are being held virtually. Although, very little legislation is being considered.
