NFIB Jon Boesche and Steve Gilbertson Testify in Support of Delaying the Paid Leave Law’s Implementation by One Year in Minnesota

NFIB Minnesota State Director Jon Boesche and NFIB Member and owner of Electramatic Steve Gilbertson testified before the Minnesota House Workforce, Labor, and Economic Development Finance and Policy Committee in support of HF 11, which will delay Minnesota’s Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) Law implementation by one year.

Boesche said, “The Paid Family Medical Leave Act is the largest mandate ever to be imposed on Minnesota’s businesses. It comes at a time when businesses are already struggling with workforce shortages, increased tax burdens, and compliance with new regulations from the last two years. Most small businesses lack an HR department or accountant, meaning that the owner is regularly involved in both the administration and operations of the business. This bill would provide additional time for businesses to adjust their payroll systems, staffing plans, and financial strategies to accommodate the requirements of the new program.”

Gilbertson said, “This PFML payroll tax and one-size-fits-all requirements will add fuel to the fire and should absolutely be postponed until 2027 providing additional time for business to recover from the effects of COVID. This would also provide additional time for the Legislature to explore ways to make this more affordable and efficient.”
