Leaders say lawmakers unlikely to agree on a spending plan until September
House, Senate Still at Odds Over State Budget
North Carolina’s fiscal year is well underway, but lawmakers still haven’t passed a state budget and probably won’t until September, at the earliest.
House Speaker Tim Moore told Spectrum News the General Assembly is unlikely to pass a budget until September. “Just with some absences I know that the Senate has on their side, and with just some of the logistics that have been talked about at this point … you’re talking about a September date for actual passage — signing (the bill) into law and all that,” Moore said.
Sticking points range from pay raises for state employees to tax cuts. NFIB is following the budget talks carefully to ensure the General Assembly takes no actions that would lead to tax increases or additional burdens on small businesses.
After the Assembly completes the budget session, they will return sometime in the fall to tackle House, Senate, and congressional redistricting before the filing period opens for the 2024 primaries and general elections.
