Governor Ivey Calls Special Session on Redistricting

Gov. Kay Ivey has called lawmakers back to Montgomery for a special session on redistricting beginning Monday, July 17. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of in affirming a lower-court decision that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act. Because of the ruling, the state has to come up with a new congressional map before next year’s elections. Maps drawn and passed by the Legislature by the July 21 deadline would have to be approved by the federal court at a hearing scheduled for early August. If the Legislature fails to draw new maps satisfying the court, a special master will be appointed to draw the maps for the state. Currently, redistricting is the only item on the agenda, but other issues are expected to come up, although other bills would require a two-third’s majority to pass. “We’ll be following the proceedings closely to ensure that lawmakers don’t take any actions that could harm Alabama’s small businesses,” NFIB State Director Rosemary Elebash said.
