Interim committees are gathering information on potential bills
The General Assembly won’t gavel back into session until Jan. 11, but that doesn’t mean the work stops in the Peach State.
Throughout the summer and fall, lawmakers will convene a series of interim study committees in Atlanta and across Georgia to dig into policy issues that could shape legislation affecting the state’s small business owners in the year ahead.
Interim committees don’t write or vote on bills, but they gather testimony, data, and stakeholder input that often becomes the basis for legislation once the session begins. NFIB Georgia State Director Hunter Loggins will be tracking several of these committees closely on behalf of small business owners across the state:
- Joint Study Committee on Generational Sustainability of Family Farms
- House Study Committee on Education Performance Metrics and Workforce Stability
- House Study Committee on Local Government Taxation, Funding, and Budgeting
- House Study Committee on Transportation Infrastructure and Vehicle Regulation
- House Study Committee on Pharmacy Benefits Managers and Consumers’ Access to Prescription Medications
- Senate Study Committee on Nuclear Power
- Senate Study Committee on Pharmacy Benefits Managers and Consumer Access to Prescription Medications
- Senate Study Committee on Protecting Free and Fair Markets in Georgia
While no specific legislative proposals have emerged from these committees yet, the range of topics touches nearly every corner of the small business community. Issues like local taxation and budgeting, pharmacy benefit manager practices, and workforce stability are perennial concerns for NFIB members, and the direction these interim discussions take could influence bills filed when the General Assembly reconvenes in January.
NFIB will continue monitoring these committee meetings throughout the summer and fall and will keep members informed as specific proposals take shape. Small business owners with interests or concerns about any of these issues are encouraged to click here and reach out to the NFIB Georgia office.
