Expanded Hours for Minors to Help Summer Labor Shortage

The New Jersey Assembly has passed A-4222, a bill which expands working hours for minors between 16 and 18 years of age, allowing them to work 50 hours per week during the non-school year. The bill also expands working hours for minors who are 14 and 15 years of age to mirror federal laws. Under the bill, the authority for school districts to issue working papers for minors will be eliminated. Instead, it establishes a centralized database within the Department of Labor & Workforce Development where minors will have a one-time registration requirement.    

The bill now moves to the Senate, and it is anticipated it will be signed into law prior to July. NFIB State Director Eileen Kean testified in favor of the bill because it may provide some relief to members struggling to hire for the summer months.
