Election Night Brings Disappointment and Challenges for Small Business in Michigan

While over 70% of candidates endorsed by the NFIB Michigan PAC won their reelection on election night, it was not enough to make a difference in the make-up of the legislature.

For the first time in forty years, both the state house and senate will NOT have pro-small business majorities. This, along with Governor Whitmer’s decisive win, means things could get rocky for small business owners in the coming legislative session.

While a list of legislative priorities from the majority has not yet been officially announced, it is clear that repealing Right to Work and reinstating prevailing wage will be key pieces of legislation in early 2023. We can also expect far more employer mandates including legislation that would raise the unemployment insurance weekly benefit as well as extending benefits from 20 back to 26 weeks.  Increased spending and environmental regulations also have been discussed.

NFIB Michigan staff are preparing to use every tool to protect and defend Michigan small businesses. While it will be challenging, the vote margins in both chambers are slim so more than EVER before, it will be imperative that small business owners engage and advocate with their elected officials on both sides of the aisle. When NFIB members share their stories, they help legislators understand how their decisions directly impact Main Street. Two or three legislators that decide to change their vote is all that will be needed to stop job killing legislation.
