EARNED SICK TIME AND TIPPED WAGE CHANGES REMAIN TOP PRIORITY FOR SMALL BUISNESS IN 2025

December 30, 2024

The Michigan Legislature failed to make critical changes during the lame duck session

Unfortunately, the Michigan Legislature failed to make critical changes for small businesses to the Earned Sick Time Act and a restoration of the tipped wage for restaurant servers.

Speaker-Elect Matt Hall (R-42) has already been working with the Governor and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-29) and the business community to move legislation as soon as possible.

In the last days of the 2024 Lame Duck session, after promises to do so, elected officials failed to take up and pass legislation that would provide much needed changes to the Earned Sick Time Law and restore the tipped wage for restaurant servers. All 54 Republicans and 1 Democrat ended up boycotting session until something was done, which, unfortunately, did not happen.

As these laws are set to go into effect on February 21, 2025. NFIB continues to push for quick changes to the earned sick time laws in order to ensure both employers and employees are able to have time off policies that work for their business. Even if you have done so in the past, please consider writing to your legislators and the Governor and share the effects this damaging policy will have on you and your employees by clicking HERE.
