Learn about the Commonwealth's unemployment insurance (UI) disaster and how small business owners can work together to advocate for a solution.

On October 22, NFIB Massachusetts State Director Christopher Carlozzi hosted a virtual lunchtime event for members to learn about the Commonwealth’s unemployment insurance (UI) disaster and how small business owners can work together to advocate for a solution.

THE CHALLENGE

– Because of the pandemic-related-layoffs and a massive state accounting error, employers across the Commonwealth are responsible for repaying nearly $5 billion in UI debt.

– Massachusetts is consistently ranked one of the worst UI systems in the nation due to lax eligibility standards, the longest duration, and the second highest weekly maximum benefit.

– By Q4 in 2027 the UI Trust Fund is projected to be insolvent, triggering additional UI tax hikes.
