Candidates Get Ready for June 21 Primary Runoff

Gov. Kay Ivey avoided a runoff, beating back eight Republican challengers in the May 24 primary election, but state Sen. Malika Sanders-Fortier will square off against Yolanda Flowers in the June 21 runoff to determine the Democratic gubernatorial nominee.

Under state law, a runoff is required if no candidate earns at least 50% of the vote.

In the Republican runoff for secretary of state, it will be state Rep. Wes Allen against State Auditor Jim Zeigler.

Stan Cooke and state Rep. Andrew Sorrell are in the runoff to determine the GOP nominee for state attorney general.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Katie Britt, former president of the Business Council of Alabama, will face U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks. The winner of that race will face Democratic candidate Will Boyd in the November election.

And in the 5th congressional district, Republican Dale Strong is going up against Dr. Casey Wardynski in the June 21 runoff. The Democratic nominee is Kathy Warner-Stanton.

Legislative races

Eighty-three of the 87 legislative candidates endorsed by the NFIB Alabama PAC won their races outright in the May 24 primary.

In addition, voters overwhelmingly approved Amendment 1 to the state constitution. The measure will allow the Alabama Department of Conversation and Natural Resources to borrow $80 million to improve state parks.

Absentee ballots

Also, remember: Alabama has open primaries, but under the state’s crossover voting rule, you aren’t allowed to switch parties in the runoff election. That means if you voted in the Republican primary, you can’t cross over and vote in the Democratic runoff, and vice versa.
