Voters will return to the polls June 16 for runoff elections in several statewide races
Alabama’s election calendar remains uncertain as state and federal courts continue to weigh challenges involving congressional and legislative district maps.
On Thursday, May 28, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a lower court ruling that would have required new State Senate district lines for the 2026 election. The decision allows the state to continue preparing for upcoming elections while the case moves forward.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Steve Marshall has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a separate dispute over the state’s congressional districts. The request seeks to allow Alabama to use its 2023 congressional map while litigation continues.
The legal battles could affect several congressional races and may require additional elections later this year. Candidates have already qualified for a special congressional primary scheduled for Aug. 11.
NFIB State Director Rosemary Elebash said small business owners are watching developments closely.
“Small business owners want elections that are fair, transparent and settled as quickly as possible,” Elebash said. “The ongoing uncertainty makes it harder for everyone, including employers who depend on a stable political and economic environment, to plan ahead.”
In addition to the redistricting disputes, Alabama voters will return to the polls June 16 for runoff elections in several statewide races, including lieutenant governor, attorney general, agriculture commissioner and Public Service Commission.
