NFIB’s December jobs report found that 35% (seasonally adjusted) of small business owners reported job openings they could not fill in December, down one point from November.
What it means: In the August report, small business optimism fell 2.5 points. Inflation remains small businesses’ top concern.
Our take: Optimism continues to fluctuate month-to-month as hiring challenges, low sales and increasing cost pressures continue to cause concern.

The numbers are in and show Utah a big winner if Congress acts to make the 20% Small Business Deduction a permanent feature of the U.S. tax code instead of letting it expire at the end of 2025.
Depending on Congress either letting the 20% Small Business Deduction in the federal tax code expire or be made permanent, Montana’s economy stands to suffer or benefit big, according to two reports issued late last week.
