NFIB Webinar Gives Update on the 2024 Small Business Landscape

NFIB’s The 2024 Small Business Landscape – Legal, Regulatory, and Economic Updates for the New Year webinar discusses the outlook for the new year. NFIB Small Business Legal Center Executive Director Elizabeth Milito went over new labor law and tax issues coming in 2024. “The major rules going into effect include a new joint employer rule, a new overtime rule, a new independent contractor rule, and the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting rule,” said Milito. Besides the rules listed above, the webinar reminded business owners about:

The Employee Retention Tax Credit Program,
The new Form I-9, which took effect in November 2023,
Two new workplace posters: the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (Know Your Rights in the Workplace) and Department of Labor’s Fair Labor Standards Act (minimum wage), and
Regarding states, Illinois has the Paid Leave for All Workers Act beginning in 2024. “Small business needs to take note as this could become something other states look into,” added Milito.

The NFIB Research Center Executive Director Holly Wade reviewed data from NFIB’s monthly economic surveys, which showed a cautious outlook towards everything from the inflation rate to the decline in job openings. “Things such as inflation and GDP are slowing down, but small businesses are being cautious,” said Wade. “Things are getting better, but it will take some time to return to normal levels.” NFIB opposed the new overtime rule, independent contractor rule, and the BOI rule. These rules will add burdensome regulations and penalties on small businesses and leave only a short time to prepare for the changes.
