Wisconsin Governor Calls Legislature Into September Special Session

Governor Tony Evers is calling legislators back to work in a Special Session to pass his plan to stabilize the state’s childcare industry, invest in higher education, support high demand workforce sectors, expand family and medical leave, and created paid family and medical leave program funded by a new employer/employee payroll tax. The Governor is proposing to spend $243 million to launch a paid family leave program with on-going funding provided by a tax paid by employers and employees based on payroll.   The Governor also wants to expand eligibility for family leave and increase the list of family members for whom employees can take leave.   Recent survey results show 84 percent of Wisconsin NFIB members are opposed to a paid family and medical leave government mandate.   The Special Session of the Legislature will convene on September 20, 2023. The regular business floor period is scheduled from September 12-21.
