Lawmakers will return to Montgomery on Feb. 4
The Alabama Legislature will gavel into session on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Small business is the backbone of Alabama’s economy, and we’ll be there to ensure our members’ voices are heard.
State Director Rosemary Elebash says one of NFIB’s top priorities will be stopping lawsuit abuse in the state.
“Inflation continues to squeeze many small businesses, but frivolous lawsuits are making a bad situation even worse,” Elebash said. “If you’ve been wronged, you have a constitutional right to seek compensation, but some cases are filed simply because someone sees a chance to make money.
“Lawsuit abuse results in higher prices for everyone,” Elebash said. “Insurance companies charge small businesses higher premiums to cover the cost of baseless litigation, and that leads to higher prices.”
Research by The Perryman Group has found that lawsuit abuse in Alabama costs the average family $1,016 a year and results in a $7.3 billion loss in economic spending.
“We’re ready to work closely with legislative leaders and Governor Ivey on legislation that creates a level playing field for everyone,” Elebash said.
