The New York Redistricting Battle is Over

New York finalized new lines for its congressional districts last week.

New York finalized new lines for its congressional districts last week. Senate and Assembly Democratic supermajorities passed the redrawn map, 45-17 in the Senate and 118-30 in the Assembly, and the map was approved by the Governor on February 28th.

The new map is the latest proposal from Democratic lawmakers after the map drawn by the bipartisan Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) was rejected.

The New York Democrats slightly modified new plan makes two districts more left-leaning, but remaining districts were largely untouched, and basically identical to the voted-down IRC map. The redrawn map helps Congressman Suozzi (D-03) and Congressman Ryan (D-18) and hurts Congressman Williams (R-22). The approved map keeps Congressman Molinaro’s (R-19) district competitive and helps Congressman LaLota (R-01).

While these changes give Democrats a small potential boost, Republicans were not fazed enough to challenge it in the courts. The new lines will be used this year for the June 25th primaries, the November 5th general election, and for the next three congressional elections before the next round of redistricting after the 2030 census.
