The Countdown to Indiana's Primary is On

The first election here in Indiana after redistricting doesn’t appear to have shaken things up for candidates among party lines. In fact, the number of Democrats seeking seats where they would have to challenge an incumbent fellow Democrat or run in a contested primary to challenge a Republican in an unfavorable district is surprisingly low. With that said, Democratic party officials will have the option of adding a candidate to the general election ballot for districts that do not have a Democratic candidate on the primary ballot. The political division among Republicans that we saw during the 2022 legislative session has carried over into contested primary races. Incumbents’ positions on social and cultural issues that hijacked the legislative session such as vaccine mandates, public health emergencies, and school curriculums have given way to attacks from primary challengers. What does this mean for small business? The primary election provides an opportunity for NFIB members to elect candidates with an interest in real policies that aim to support the business community, strengthen Indiana’s economy, and improve government efficiency. Now is the time to get out and vote for incumbents who are proven allies of small business, elect pro-small-business candidates in open seats, and prevent anti-small-business incumbents in targeted districts.   The NFIB Indiana PAC The NFIB Indiana PAC (NFIB IN PAC) issues endorsements, provides campaign contributions, and sometimes engages in independent expenditure efforts to support pro-small-business candidates. For the 2022 cycle, our focus will be on state legislative races. NFIB IN PAC does not engage in races for local offices. Members interested in supporting pro-small-business candidates can CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE.   The Endorsement Process NFIB IN PAC endorsements are first based on our biennial legislative voting record (2021-2022). That voting record is still under development, but it should be complete by mid-May.
  • Legislative incumbents seeking re-election are evaluated based on their voting record score. The most recent two-year voting record is used for house races; senate incumbents are scored over their current four-year term.
  • For challenger and open seat races, the NFIB IN PAC will identify key legislative districts where an opportunity exists to elect an ally of small business. Selected challengers and candidates for open seats in targeted districts will be invited to complete a questionnaire.
  • NFIB will continue to monitor this race and evaluate candidates for potential endorsement in the General Election on November 8.
  Key Dates: Primary Election:                Tuesday, May 3 General Election:                Tuesday, November 8 Registration Deadline:         Monday, April 4 (Primary) Monday, October 10 (General)   Early Voting: Absentee ballot applications must be received by the election authority by Thursday, April 21 (Primary) or Thursday, October 27 (General). Voting early in-person is available from Tuesday, April 5 to Monday, May 2 for the Primary, and Wednesday, October 12 to Monday, November 7 for the General.
