Gov. Whitmer and the legislative majority choose to block an income tax reduction for more than 60 percent of small businesses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LANSING (Feb. 9, 2023) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Michigan and the nation’s leading small advocacy association, today released the following statement by State Director Amanda Fisher following the state House’s passage of the conference report for HB 4001. The state Senate is expected to vote next Tuesday, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has indicated she will sign the bill when it reaches her desk: “With this bill, Governor Whitmer and the legislative majority chose to prevent an income tax reduction that would have resulted in a tax cut for more than 60 percent of small businesses in Michigan. To add injury to insult, HB 4001 gives yearly handouts to large corporations, while doing nothing to help small businesses who are struggling to survive from government shutdowns, rising inflation, and supply chain issues. One of the reasons we have ongoing budget surpluses is due to the elimination of targeted tax breaks like those found in HB 4001. If the governor and legislature are serious about moving Michigan forward, then they should not look to reinstate failed policies from the past. Those in the House who voted today for the conference report for HB 4001 just voted against Michigan small businesses. We hope the Senate will do the right thing next week and vote no.”
