NFIB Key Votes U.S. House CRA to repeal EPA’s costly methane fee rule
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 27, 2025) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, commends lawmakers for passing H.J. Res. 35. NFIB sent a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives in support of the resolution, which if enacted will repeal the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rule establishing a methane fee for oil and natural gas production, processing, transmission, and storage. This fee will increase costs for energy producers, which will be passed on to families and small businesses. H.J. Res. 35 was considered an NFIB Key Vote for the 119th Congress.
“The EPA’s methane fee would apply to oil and gas facilities that report annual methane emissions above a certain threshold,” said Adam Temple, NFIB Senior Vice President for Advocacy. “In 2024, a $900 fee per metric ton of methane would kick in above the threshold. By 2026, the fee will increase to $1,500 per metric ton. This fee will increase the cost of energy production which will be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher energy costs. In its rule, the EPA acknowledged that this regulation would increase the price of gasoline and decrease gas production.
“Small businesses want affordable, abundant, and reliable energy. We are pleased to see lawmakers in the House addressing these concerns by passing H.J. Res. 35.”
