Small Business Owner: ‘The Inventory Tax Just Needs To Go Away’

SPRING BRANCH (Feb. 21, 2023) – In a conversation with ABC13’s Tom Abrahams, NFIB member and small business owner Bud Walters described how his business pays at least $40,000 each year in inventory tax – money he says he could use to grow his business and invest in his employees. “It’s a recurring, repetitive tax,” Walters said. “We’re paying tax when we buy the product, the desk, the chairs, and then we’re turning around and paying tax year after year after year on the same product.” When asked about the proposal to raise the exemption from $2,500 to $100,000, Walters quipped: “It’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but it’s not much. The inventory tax just needs to go away.” During his State of the State address, Governor Greg Abbott listed property tax relief as his first emergency item for this legislative session.
