Small Business Comments on Today’s State-of-the-State Speech

DENVER, Feb. 17, 2021—The following statement was issued today by Tony Gagliardi, Colorado state director for the National Federation of Independent Business, the state’s and nation’s leading small-business advocacy association, following Gov. Jared Polis’s State-of-the-State address today.

“We were delighted to hear Governor Polis call to abolish the business personal property tax and urge the Legislature to move swiftly on that. For too long, this has been a highly annoying and needless paperwork headache for small-business owners to comply with and all for a rivulet, not a stream, of tax revenue that costs more to enforce than it brings in. I don’t think local governments are going to suffer because of the income they’ll lose over some restaurateur’s no longer needing to calculate the depreciation on his 10-year-old potato peeler.

“We were also encouraged to hear him call for greater broadband access for rural communities and for a doubling of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Research shows that the EITC, not minimum-wage increases, is the best path out of poverty.”
