Sales Tax Holiday on Groceries an Opportunity to Support Local Businesses, Secure Significant Savings

NFIB State Director Jim Brown says the sales tax holiday on groceries will be a much-needed boost to small businesses and their customers. The Tennessee General Assembly approved a three-month sales tax holiday on groceries from Aug. 1 through Oct. 31. The back-to-school sales tax holiday on clothing, books, school supplies, and computers will take place last weekend, July 28-30. “Many NFIB members across the state have said inflation has impacted them and their customers and that foot traffic is down,” Brown said. “Both sales tax holidays come at an important time, giving locally-owned stores a timely shot in the arm and their customers a great chance to save money.” The latest NFIB Small Business Optimism Index said owners rank inflation and labor quality as the most important problems facing their small businesses. “Small businesses drive Tennessee’s economy, but many have had a challenging year so far dealing with rising costs and a severe workforce shortage,” Brown said. “We encourage Tennesseans to ‘shop small’ to help the independent and family-owned businesses that create jobs and support their hometowns throughout the year.” The National Federation of Independent Business is the nation’s leading small business advocacy group.
