Pennsylvania Senate Approves Energy Choice Legislation

The Senate recently approved Senate Bill 143 (Yaw), which prohibits municipalities in Pennsylvania from enacting policies that would restrict or ban the connection or reconnection of a utility service based upon the type of energy source. “Enacting policies to mandate the use of one energy source over another is blatant government interference into consumer choice. This would not only increase costs, but also undermine the free market by propping up alternative energy sources that are less reliable and still developing,” said State Director Greg Moreland. NFIB further expressed to members of the Pennsylvania Senate that “Business owners must be allowed the ability to choose the energy source best suited for them regardless of location. Higher energy costs could force struggling businesses to decide to leave Pennsylvania or cease business altogether in the face of record-high inflation.” SB 143 is now before the House Local Government Committee. NFIB will continue to work with members of the General Assembly to support this legislation and get it signed into law.
